Si de algo sabe el cine infantil es de dragones. Los hemos visto grandes y pequeños, amigables y temibles, nobles y sabios, charlatanes y divertidos… Pero ahora, una nueva cinta de animación se atreve a reinventar de nuevo la mitología de estas fantásticas criaturas: Dragonkeeper: Guardiana de dragones. El animador Salvador Simó retoma la batuta de director tras su largometraje Buñuel en el laberinto de las tortugas, con el que recibió el Goya a Mejor Película de Animación en 2020. Ahora, junto a Li Jianping, se pone al mando de esta ambiciosa superproducción entre España y China.
Dragonkeeper traslada a la gran pantalla la novela homónima de la autora australiana Carole Wilkinson, que forma parte de una saga de seis libros. Por ello está llamarse a convertirse en una trilogía de fantasía épica ambientada en la China de hace 2.500 años, durante la dinastía Han. Esta primera entrega nos presenta a Ping, una niña cuyo futuro parece quedar limitado a la servidumbre. Sin embargo, su contacto con el sabio dragón Danzi le demostrará que el destino puede cambiarse, y le revelará los mágicos poderes que la vinculan con un fabuloso y misterioso objeto que juntos deberán proteger.
CINE INFANTIL CON ESPÍRITU AVENTURERO
Salvador Simó adapta la historia original de Wilkinson con cierta solemnidad, y su película no se queda en una mera parodia que no para de repartir gags a diestro y siniestro (la cual parece ser la única fórmula del cine de animación infantil producido en España en los últimos años). A pesar de su estructura de cuento de hadas (Ping vive su propio «Viaje del Héroe» campbelliano prácticamente a rajatabla), tampoco se fija especialmente en los clásicos de Walt Disney. El tono de la película se acerca más al cine de aventuras juvenil y a sagas de fantasía épica como Piratas del Caribe o Las crónicas de Narnia, en las que Simó tambien ha trabajado.
La película se atreve a hacer que sus personajes sufran y padezcan, y no tiene reparos en mostrar en pantalla la muerte, o cómo sus héroes sangran, algo que estaría totalmente prohibido en los cuentos de Disney. Dragonkeeper rompe con la receta, y ofrece un nuevo tipo de cine familiar que se toma a sí mismo mucho más en serio; pero en el que tampoco falta un necesario toque de humor blanco. A pesar de ello, la cinta no está exenta de caer en clichés, tópicos y recursos narrativos presentes en numerosos productos destinados al público infantil; y que acaban empañando el conjunto.
LAS COMPARACIONES SON ODIOSAS
Sin embargo, ese tono solemne que la convierte en un artefacto fílmico mucho más interesante y atrevido desde el punto de vista crítico, puede resultar algo anodino para los más pequeños, y hace menos «queribles» a sus personajes. Ping no tiene la entrañable torpeza del Hipo de Cómo entrenar a tu dragón, el dragón Danzi no tiene el carisma socarrón y anárquico del Mushu de Mulán y el villano carece de la atrayente y calculadora malicia del Lord Shen de Kung Fu Panda 2; por citar algunas de las aproximaciones de la animación estadounidense a la cultura china y a la mitología draconiana.
Aparte de comparaciones más o menos afortunadas, hay que destacar la factura técnica de Dragonkeeper, la cual acaba traduciéndose en un apartado visual apabullante. No solo merece mención el cuidado sus paisajes y fondos, sino también el diseño de sus personajes, que mantienen un estilo «cartoon» dentro de la animación 3D. Es notorio también el esfuerzo por cuidar la dirección, composición y puesta en escena; así como su valentía de plantar cara a los grandes estudios. Estamos ante una película en la que China reivindica su propia mitología y España pone en valor el talento y creatividad de su industria animada. Todo ello consigue que Dragonkeeper: Guardiana de dragones alce la voz para entonar un cantar de gesta que se siente como propio. Y lo que es mejor en el inicio de una trilogía, deja con ganas de más.
