Josep Bartolí fue un dibujante catalán que, como otros tantos artistas, se vio perseguido por las tropas nacionales tras el estallido de la Guerra Civil Española. En 1939 cruzó la frontera hacia Francia y acabó recluido hasta en siete campos de concentración. Sin embargo, logró huir hacia el exilio en México, donde conoció a la mismísima Frida Kahlo, de quien fue amante. Una vida que daría para película, como debe estar pensando el lector y como pensó también el dibujante francés Aurel antes de ponerse manos a la obra con la realización de su primer largometraje, Josep, precisamente sobre la historia de Bartolí.
Josep tuvo una acogida muy tímida en los cines españoles, aunque no tanto así en los festivales. Tras un siempre notable paso por la sección oficial de Cannes, Aurel consiguió hacerse con un merecido premio a Mejor Dirección en la SEMINCI de Valladolid. Sí, han leído bien, Mejor Dirección. Un galardón que, desgraciadamente, no suele tener en cuenta el encomiable trabajo de los cineastas en el campo de la animación. Siendo una producción mayormente francesa —aunque también española y belga— no pudo optar al Goya a mejor película animada —una lástima, pues fue aquel agrio 2021 en el que solo había un largometraje candidato en la categoría—, y se tuvo que conformar con una escuela nominación a Mejor película europea. El proyecto, al igual que la propia historia de Bartolí, sigue siendo muy desconocido en nuestro país.
Como un juego de dibujante a dibujante, Aurel incorpora a la propuesta las ilustraciones a tinta originales del autor, y les da gran relevancia, no solo estética, sino también narrativa, dentro del relato, conformado también por las pinturas con las que el propio Aurel recrea las vivencias de Bartolí. De esta manera se regresa a la definición más pura de «dibujos animados». Es Josep una «película de dibujos» más que cualquier otra a la que cataloguemos con este término. La diferencia de estilos artísticos en la animación nos hace distinguir el presente del pasado, para el que se utilizan colores más apagados y sepias, se dibuja un trazo más marcado en los personajes y se reduce el «frame-rate» para hacer cobrar mucha más presencia a las imágenes estáticas. Cada plano es una auténtica obra pictórica que constituye un retrato casi literal del exilio republicano de la Guerra Civil. Todo el conjunto adquiere, dado el estilo de dibujo de Aurel, un curioso toque naif, tanto que si no fuera por la terrible dureza de sus imágenes pareciera que estas pertenecen a un cuento infantil.
Pero no nos engañemos, Josep no es una película destinada a los niños, aunque sí que puede resultar verdaderamente didáctica sobre la historia contemporánea de España, tan discutida hoy en día; y aunque cuenta con secuencias algo fuertes (pero no explícitas ni morbosas), sus delicados y sutiles trazos (en todos los aspectos) permiten que pueda llegar a ser un interesante visionado para compartir en familia, sobre todo con niños mayores y adolescentes.
